50th Anniversary: Celebration with Monash Alumni in Hong Kong

The Honourable
Dr Peter Costello AC
“The best law schools in the world have meaningful relationships with their alumni at home and abroad,” Professor Bryan Horrigan, Dean of the Monash Law Faculty said.

More than 60 people attended a Monash alumni dinner in Hong Kong in April with the Vice-Chancellor and President, and the Dean of Law, amongst many other prominent guests.

The dinner celebrated the Monash Law Faculty’s 50th anniversary and laid the foundations for some key local fundraising initiatives. Guests in attendance were alumni from the region, who occupy high level positions in government, business and law including judges, law firm partners, CEOs and other senior professionals.

This dinner was generously hosted by Monash Law alumnus and Group Chief Executive of Dairy Farm International, Mr Graham Allan and his wife Judy and we thank Mr and Mrs Allan for their kind and generous support in hosting this special event.

The keynote address was provided by prominent Law alumnus, the Honourable Dr Peter Costello AC. Dr Costello has had many significant political and professional achievements, one of which being his record as Australia’s longest serving Treasurer. Dr Costello was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia in January 2011 and last year received an Honorary Doctorate from the Council of Monash University.

Guests also heard from the Chair of the Hong Kong Chapter of the International Alumni Advisory Group to the Dean, Mr Sam Farrands (Partner at Minter Ellison, Hong Kong). Our Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Ed Byrne AC, welcomed and introduced Dr Costello; and the Dean of Law, Professor Horrigan, concluded the speeches by providing thanks and indicating the future direction and intentions of the Monash Law Faculty.

Significantly, Mr Farrands announced a new Hong Kong student scholarship and student internship initiatives which are to be supported by our alumni in the region. The Faculty is grateful for the support of our alumni in the region.
